Two English and one Irish woman have been rescued after they were trapped in a secluded valley in the Himalayas,Nepal, for three days .

The trio, named as Catherine Jane Wilson,53,from Reigate,Emily Jane Coates,44,from London, and Mary Reape,65,from Ireland, were being led by guides from Katmandu.

But on October 27 they became stranded in an area known as the ‘Hidden Valley’,a high-altitude basin in the Mustang region which has a history of extreme and unpredictable weather including heavy snowfall and landslides.

They were being led by guides from the Sacred Himalaya Treks and Expedition. The other trekkers in the group were Dirgalal Lama,Nimaraj Lama,Maandhoj Lama,Navin Lama,Tashi Sherpa,Tshering Tamang,Sonam Tamang,Nima Lama,Kaila Tamang,Buddharaj Tamang,Kanchhaman Tamang and Dorje Tamang.

An army helicopter was requested by the trekking agency, who offered to pay the costs, after the group were lost. But this request was declined due to severe weather and the unclear location of the trekkers.

Nanda Ram Pariyar, the assistant chief district officer of the Mustang district, told The Times: ‘We could not establish contact yesterday. We did not have any clue where to send the rescue helicopter.’

On Wednesday, conditions had improved, and the army and police started the rescue mission on foot. The search team initially struggled to locate the stranded group, due to their remote location.

The Hidden Valley is situated above the Marpha Valley which is an isolated basin under Tukuche Peak in the Dhaulagiri mountain range. The three British and Irish hikers were a two-day trek away from Jomsom.

The group was eventually found and Mustang authorities said they were elated but were ‘barely able to walk’ when they were discovered. They only had enough supplies to last for two more days,The Telegraph reported. The lost trekkers were sent straight to a military hospital for medical examinations and food.

Jane told The Telegraph: ‘I’m hugely relieved that everyone is back safe. I’m amazed and deeply thankful for the strength and kindness of the Nepali people.’

Famous trekking locations across Nepal were closed this week due to bad weather, including Annapurna,Makalu and Everest regions. Hundreds of people are stuck at Everest Base Camp as a result. The extreme conditions is thought to have been caused by Cyclone Montha,a powerful tropical storm that has struck India’s eastern coast.

A rescue helicopter skidded while attempting to land and crashed at a helipad near Everest Base Camp on Wednesday,October 29. Fortunately,no one was hurt in the incident.
